Martial Arts in Newberry

Meet Us on the Mats for Energetic Arts Training!

Mat Life is known for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing, and Karate. In 2019, we opened our Energetic Arts program to support restorative cross-training for our adult and youth members.

Qigong and Tai Chi - Cultivate Life Force Energy

Mat Life Training Center is the proud home of Maahaah-Rooh Energetic Arts, overseen by Dr. K.A. Shakoor, DAOM. The objective of Qigong and Tai Chi practice at Mat Life is to teach a step-by-step method of exercise to keep the body and mind in optimal fitness. This highly effective and easily retainable system of energetic exercise is designed for everyone – families, working adults, students and seniors. This very low-impact form of exercise includes standing, sitting, and low motion movements.

Restorative Yoga – Regenerative Practice for Adults and Kids

Also a part of Maahaah-Rooh Energetic Arts, our Restorative Yoga program offers classes for adults and kids, and focuses on mindfulness meditation, breathwork, and hatha yoga practices. The purpose of these classes is to deepen awareness of the mindbody, improve range of motion and functional strength, and calm the nervous system.

Flow Arts - Integrative Brain Training through Play for Adults and Kids

Flow Arts is the result of the intersection of a variety of movement-based disciplines including dance, juggling, fire-spinning, and object manipulation. This skill-based movement art naturally brings more of our awareness to our bodies. As we use our muscles to control props through space, we are engaging in an easy and fun form of exercise. Many flow artists achieve a greater degree of fitness, and are even driven to do additional strength and flexibility training simply to perform better.. This type of training is a natural complement to martial arts practice.

Acro-Tumbling - Functional Movement Training for Kids!

Acro-Tumbling is the fusion of tumbling, dance, gymnastics technique, agility, and functional strength through the use of acrobatic skills without the use of a sprung floor. Based on safe and effective progressions with proven results in areas of flexibility, balance, limbering, and tumbling, this program incorporates natural movement and play to develop acrobatic skill. From beginners doing leap frogs to the advanced student achieving a standing switch front aerial, skills are performed without major equipment and complement competitive martial arts training.
